"Hate Crime and the Deaf: Understanding American Sign Language Wars"

With Carl N. Schroeder, M.Ed.

While you are looking at this banner, somebody, somewhere, is continuing a hate crime against American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf people. It is not an event; it is a process that is the act of mean-spirited bigots, enabling the state of constant victimization--exploiting deaf people of all ages--and belitlement--portraying their language and culture as less impressive and important than it really is. Hatred of ASL and deaf people can be approached from many angles--from the standpoints of economics, politics, history, ideology, and various other disciplines, and the laundry list can bread misery among deaf people for generations to come. We MUST stop hate crime now!

When: Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 6 pm.

Where: Portland State University, Smith Building, Room 338, Van Port Room

Who: Carl Schroeder, OAD President

What: A lecture on hate crime and deaf people

Why: Hate crime exists in the world of the Deaf and we CAN stop it.

Seismic Rehabilitation Grant Program
Attention: Grant Selection Committee
Oregon Emergency Management
3225 State Street, Room 115
Salem, Oregon 97301

Dear Seismic Grant Selection Committee:

We are interested and supportive of the grant for seismic rehabilitation for Oregon School for the DeaF (OSD). As community members of an organization that promotes the interests of all Deaf people in Oregon, we are proponents for action that would ensure a better, safer place for all of OSD's students. We are aware of the age of the buildings and value the heritage of such an organization, and are desirous of enhancing the environment for a new generation of students at OSD.

We encourage you to five this school priority in your consideration for this program. Oregon's Deaf studetns deserve a safe place to receive an education, and we know that OSD is an integral part of the success of Oregonians who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, statewide. Thank you for your consideration, and we encourage you to select OSD as a site for building rehabilitation.

On November 15, 2009, I had a great opportunity to visit the Junior National Association of the Deaf (JrNAD) chapter at the Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD) in Salem. It had the first meeting after a few years of "hibernation," and through efforts of our own Trustee Colleen Thayer and Second Vice President Margi Morgan the JrNAD chapter is back and alive.

Colleen Thayer who is ASL Specialist opened the meeting by introducing Margi Morgan. Margi spoke about the history of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) that was organized to respond to the 1880 Milan Resolution banning the use of sign language in education of the Deaf. The NAD accomplished many important issues affecting the Deaf, and in 1921 the Oregon Association of the Deaf (OAD) became affiliated with the NAD. The mission of OAD reads:
