OAD
ODHHS at Risk
Saturday, 10 July 2010 10:27
 Hello fellow Oregonians,

I am your new OAD president and I look forward to serving the community to the best of my abilities.

It has been brought to my attention that Oregon Deaf/Hard of Hearing community is at danger of losing ODHHS (Oregon Deaf and Hard of Hearing Service) valuable service due to budgetary decision by the State.

What does that mean for us? We would no longer have an interpreter referral service and we will be on our OWN.
- No centralized referral database of ASL interpreters and captioners.
- No accountability. (holding interpreters and captioners responsible)
- No quality control. (oversee the quality of interpreters and captioners)

Imagine the chaos that this will cause for everyone in Oregon when trying to find a qualified interpreter or captioners for all kinds of things? No one would have a place to contact for interpreters. This will set us back 20 years.

OAD is committed to be involved in this matter. We still need YOUR help. How can you help?
- Contact your legislature.
- Send me your KEY POINTS on what might happen if the service of ODHHS is cut off.
- Send me your testimonials on why and how the service of interpreter/captioners is very valuable to you and what impact it holds for you.

Send it to before Tuesday, the 13th so I can present it at a meeting that I will be attending in Salem.

Thank you,

Frank Mounts
OAD President

UPDATE: Due to involvement of the community protesting, ODHHS is here to stay. Thank you everyone!

Vacancy on our advisory committee at the Public Utility Commission (PUC)
Saturday, 09 July 2011 15:15
We have a vacancy on our advisory committee at the Public Utility Commission (PUC).  We are seeking someone who is deaf or hard of hearing to advise us on the following 3 programs that affect the individuals with disabilities and/or persons who are low-income:

 Telecommunication Devices Access Program (TDAP)
Oregon Telephone Assistance Program (OTAP)
Oregon Telecommunications Relay Service (OTRS)

It’s a two-year volunteer commitment and meetings are held twice a year in March and September at the PUC.  We reimburse for mileage and lodging, when applicable.  For additional information, please visit http://www.puc.state.or.us/PUC/news/2011/2011005.shtml

We are aware that many from the deaf and hard of hearing community are no longer relying on TTYs and the traditional relay service to make and receive phone calls.  We realize most are using videophones, etc. to make and receive calls via the Video Relay Service.  However, it does not prevent a committee member from suggesting other types of available equipment for access to the phone.  For instance, we now loan speech generating devices based on the recommendation of a former committee member who had a speech impairment.  We welcome a dedicated and motivated individual who is willing to advise us on how we can enhance our services to the population they represent, especially as we strive to adapt to evolving technology.
